The Crop; Sour Vs Impacted Crop

The Crop

It’s a little pocket at the base of their neck where they store food before it moves down to the stomach. It is 100% normal for chickens to go to bed with a massive, bulging crop. As long as it is flat and empty in the morning, your chooks are perfectly healthy.

But what if it’s NOT empty in the morning? You might be dealing with a Crop Issue.

IMPACTED CROP

A physical blockage from tough grass or debris. The crop feels like a hard rock, or sometimes like kinetic sand.

Home Care: Isolate and withhold food. Give a few drops of olive oil right inside the beak and gently massage the crop downwards to break up the mass.

The Breeder Trick: Some keepers use a few drops of Coke (a method actually borrowed from treating impacted horses). The acidity and carbonation can dissolve the fibrous mass. HOWEVER, we urge extreme caution: the high sugar in Coke isn’t necessarily good, and this is one of those methods that may or may not work.

SOUR CROP

A yeast infection. It feels like a squishy water balloon and smells foul (like sour milk). Fluid may leak from their beak.

Home Care: Isolate. Withhold ALL food for 24 hours, and water for the first 12 hours.

The Breeder Trick: Many experienced keepers use human baby oral thrush drops (like Nilstat/Nystatin) 3 times a day to kill the yeast. Please note: This is strictly an off-label use of human medication. Without precise dosage, it carries serious risks and we do not officially recommend it without vet consultation.

🚨 If you Google crop treatments, you will see advice to hold your chicken upside down and squeeze the crop to make them vomit. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. Chickens cannot safely vomit, and they can easily aspirate (breathe toxic fluid into their lungs) and die instantly.

An important note from us

An important note from us: Please remember that home and unofficial remedies always carry risks. If you are treating a crop issue and see no improvement within 24-48 hours, please consult an avian vet immediately. Crop issues can cause a bird to deteriorate incredibly fast, and early professional intervention is often critical to save them.
