Regarding Size of the Brooder Box
The image above shows an example brooder setup with wood shavings, feeder, waterer, and heat pad. The chicks pictured are day-olds with plenty of room. Please keep in mind that chicks grow very quickly. Realistically, this box is suitable for up to 6 chicks, or possibly up to 8 small bantam breeds, when considering their growth over the full 5–6 weeks of brooding.
If you have a larger cage that can be used as a brooder from 3–4 weeks onward, this box works perfectly as a starter brooder and can comfortably house up to a dozen day-old chicks for the first week or two.
