When syringing e.g. worming or assisting an unwell chicken, be very careful. Chickens cannot close their glottis (airway), so if food or fluid enters the airway, they can aspirate.

Always place food or fluids along the side of the mouth, as deep as possible. Cut food into tiny pieces or form a small pellet using mash. Gently place it inside the beak and let the chicken swallow on its own.

If you are not confident, give only a very small amount at a time and allow the chicken to swallow naturally, never force it.
We hope you never have to do this for your chook, but if that unfortunate day comes, this tip may help keep your feathered friend safe.
