The Copper Marans chicken is a popular breed known for its beautiful feather coloration, friendly temperament, and delicious dark brown eggs. Originating from the town of Marans in France, these chickens were initially bred for their exceptional egg-laying capabilities and hardiness.

Copper Marans chickens are medium-sized birds with a robust build and deep copper-colored plumage. They can have both feathered and clean legs and feet depending on origin, with a single comb and wattles that are typically red in color. Their striking appearance and gentle disposition make them a favorite among backyard poultry enthusiasts and small-scale farmers alike.

One of the most notable features of the Copper Marans breed is their egg production. They are renowned for laying eggs with rich, dark brown shells, which are highly sought after by egg enthusiasts. Copper Marans hens are typically consistent layers, providing a steady supply of eggs throughout the season. In addition to their egg-laying abilities, they are known for their friendly and docile nature, making them excellent pets and suitable for families with children. They are relatively easy to handle and enjoy foraging in outdoor environments, although they can also adapt well to confinement if necessary.

While copper Marans is a very difficult breed to get it right, our first aim of breeding Marans is the egg colour and the size of the bird, there are traits we are currently working on to improve in our pens in coming years, therefore it may not be suitable if you are after a bloodline to exhibit. Our marans breeders produce average 3-4+ shade hen egg, based on French Marans egg colour chart. However, please kindly understand that the shade of the eggs can sometime change depending on diet, weather, egg laying frequency and the condition of the laying hen.

Please see Marans – Open Poultry Standard Australia for more info and breed standards.
