Araucana is a distinctive breed renowned for its unique appearance and blue-green eggs. Originating from South America, particularly from the Araucania region of Chile. They come in various color varieties, including black, white, silver, and golden. They are medium-sized birds with a compact body with bead around the beak and crest on the head. They are hardy and tolerate wide range of climates, considerably early maturing breed compare to most other heritage breed.
One of the most remarkable traits of Araucana chickens is their egg color. They lay eggs with shells ranging from blue to green, which are highly sought after for their novelty and aesthetic appeal. The depth of the egg colour can change depending on various factors e.g. age of the hen, season, weather and diet. Often the youngest pullets lay most impressive deep blue- green eggs and the depth of the colour gets lighter as they mature.
Araucanas may not be the most cuddly breed, but they can develop a strong bond with their keeper when raised from a young age, especially with the help of treats. They are active birds that thrive in free-range environments, enjoying foraging and exploring their surroundings.
We have been breeding Araucanas since the very beginning of Pip & Grow. Over the years, our journey with this breed has been slow, with some seasons requiring us to take a step back while carefully sourcing new genetics to improve our lines. Our 2025/26 breeders include well-sized roosters with good width, all with crests and beards, and a deep blue coloration. We are pleased with the progress we’ve made and look forward to further improving this breed in the seasons ahead.
