Most heritage breed chicks cannot be sexed upon hatching unless they have been specifically bred to carry visible auto sexing traits. [Click to view more info] The traditional method to determine sex is through vent sexing by a highly skilled professional which typically yields an 80 percent accuracy rate. Unfortunately there are not many experts are around in Australia and their knowledge is closely guarded.
We were incredibly fortunate to travel to South Korea to undergo formal training in this specialized technique. While we have acquired the foundational skills chick sexing is an art that requires extensive practice continuous accuracy tracking and real world experience to master. It is an intricate process where the anatomical differences between newly hatched males and females can be incredibly subtle.
There are however certain presentations where we can confidently identify a chick as a definite male. We now carefully vent scan all of our chicks and actively remove these obvious males from the group. This practice allows us to refine our skills and verify our accuracy while simultaneously increasing the overall odds of you receiving female chicks.
Please note that our vent scanned chicks are still strictly offered as unsexed. Certain breeds are significantly harder to read than others and vice versa. Removing the obvious males improves your chances but it absolutely does not guarantee the remaining chicks are females. If you are not comfortable with this natural level of uncertainty we gently advise against purchasing our unsexed batches and encourage exploring our guaranteed sexed breed options instead.
