Leghorns are medium-sized, active birds with a sleek, upright posture. They have a single or rose comb, large wattles, and bright yellow legs. Their plumage comes in various colors, with White Leghorns being the most common due to their dominance in commercial egg farming. Other recognized varieties include brown, black, buff, and exchequer.
They are known for their high energy levels and strong foraging instincts. They are alert, independent, and often flighty, making them less suited to small confinement unless given plenty of space. While not naturally a cuddly breed, they can become more social with consistent handling from a young age. Their efficient feed conversion and low broodiness make them an excellent choice for those seeking a reliable and sustainable egg supply.
They are hardy birds that adapt well to various climates. However, their large combs can be prone to frostbite in colder regions, so extra care is needed during winter. Applying Vaseline to the comb can help prevent frostbite if temperatures approach 0°C. They thrive in free-range environments, where they can forage for food, reducing feed costs.
We are excited to introduce the Exchequer Standard Leghorn to our breed list, starting in the 2025/26 season. Unfortunately, there are very few breeders in Australia working with this particular color, making it challenging to source a quality starting line. Despite purchasing four dozen eggs, our hatch results were disappointing, with a low hatch rate and only a small number of chicks. Among those that hatched, some were incorrect colors, while others did not meet basic breed standards. Our foundation breeding group is not yet perfect, but we are committed to improving the quality and consistency of this striking variety over time.

Exchequer Leghorn Chicks

Exchequer Leghorn day-old chicks hatch with light yellow down feathers and black spots around the back. The amount of black spotting at hatch does not indicate their final adult appearance. The chicks will go through at least three moulting stages, gradually developing their distinct Exchequer pattern. By around six months of age, they will have fully transformed into their characteristic black-and-white mottled plumage.
